Disappointed – Mattress support is MDF (with low level of formaldehyde), March 25, 2014

I was disappointed when I removed the polyester fabric to wash it and realized that the mattress rests on an MDF board. I called the manufacturer to see learn whether formaldehyde is used on the mattress support and they confirmed that a low level of formaldehyde is used in the base (conforms to CARB Phase 2 regulations).

I feel incredibly disappointed. The Amazon website as well as BabyBjorn’s website spell out every single material used in the cradle, yet somehow the information about MDF in the mattress support is omitted.

I know that most people probably don’t care about low levels of formaldehyde in baby products. But I wanted to post this in case you (like me) are choosing this product because it is marketed as nontoxic.

I would have chosen a different cradle if I had known the mattress rests on a board made with formaldehyde.

    Great bassinet, January 14, 2013

This review is from: BABYBJORN Cradle (Baby Product)
I got this cradle for my second child. I love all its features (mesh sides, self-rocking) and simplistic design. My son, now 2 weeks old, seems content in it. I also like the hard board under the mattress (unlike many other bassinets) which allows we to put a motion/breathing sensor under the mattress. The mattress is still just thick enough that you can’t feel the sensor underneath.
I disagree with the mom of 8 who gave this product 1 star. She was obviously rating the product sight unseen and never used it herself. This bassinet is only meant for babies up to 5-6 months, still a bit too young to be watching the parent from across the room through the mesh sides “wanting to be picked up”, as she alludes to. How would that be different from a baby looking through the slats of a crib?
I personally love this bassinet. I also purchased the canopy but found that to be an extra that was pretty but not necessary. Remember to buy 1 or 2 fitted mattress sheets since the bassinet itself does not come with any sheets in the box.

Four stars because the Dream Cot is just better.

This cradle is frickin’ GORGEOUS which is why I was seduced into buying it in the first place. But for this price point, it just can’t beat the BabyHome Dream Cot.

    BabyBjorn
Pro’s: Mesh side means I’m less paranoid about SIDS; it’s more beautiful than the Dream Cot.
Con’s: When you’re postpartum, you miss having wheels on it (not having to pick it up) a LOT. Also when one arm is full of baby. Smaller size means that my super long child has already outgrown the BB, even though she’s only 6 weeks. Our babe doesn’t like the bouncy feature.

    Dream Cot
Pro’s: Really solid structure. Bigger size means our long baby can stay in it for another month beyond the BB. Solid cloth sides means that she can be in the living room without getting visual sensory overload.
Con’s: I thought the solid cloth sides would make me freak out about SIDS, but she’s so far from the edge that I’m no longer worried about it.
