First off all, $75 for this??

I bought it anyhow. I wanted my boys to enjoy the same type of toys I did. Most of this Tonka is constructed with metal. The shovel arm control… thing (not the arm) is made of plastic, along with the bucket itself.

I understand risk of children getting hurt but the arm control’s purpose is to move the arm up, down and change the angle of the bucket. Another secondary purpose is to pull the arm upward. Lifting sand, in my case, you can feel the plastic starting to buckle a little. With age and damage from being left in the sun, it’s only a matter of time before the plastic breaks.

Another thing I noticed was controlling the shovel angle. You would want it downward to shovel dirt/sand. It does that with a little effort but getting the bucket to stay and not dump your load is another story. I personally was a little frustrated with it (yes, I was trying play like a kid again)

The classic Tonka didn’t suffer these problems, and after 30 years, they can still be seen today as collectors items. I doubt this toy will last 30 years. Or any toy made today for that matter.

I guess, if you are a DIY’er, reinforcing points in the arm or bucket would solve the problems a multi-billion dollar company couldn’t figure out.

As confusing as this may sound, if I had to do it again, I would have bought it or found the classic that wasn’t even more ridiculously priced as this.

Although advertised as “Tonka tough steel construction”, only the body and arms are- the bucket and controls for it are plastic (that’s the one part that NEEDS to be metal!!). My 6 yr old is rough on toys, but no more so than I was, and my old Tonka dump and loader sat in the sandbox year round year after year for a decade without breaking. Furthermore, when the bucket is down, the sidearms hit the front wheels so they won’t spin. Not the Tonka I remember.

My boys love this Tonka loader – very durable so far, but wish it were made of 100% steel rather than the plastic levers, cab, etc. that are on it.
